Hand fed Senegals make extraordinary pets, and are known for being comical and entertaining. They are colorful, relatively small, and have the ability to talk and mimic, although they are more adept at sounds than clear speech.   They are generally quieter parrots, but they definitely can let out a screech when excited.

Senegals should be provided with at least one hour a day to play outside of their cages on a play-stand or another bird-safe area. They love to climb and can be quite the little acrobats, so many Senegals appreciate a variety of swings, ladder, and other toys to explore.

Prospective owners should also plan to invest in a variety of toys and accessories for their birds. Senegals can be strong chewers, so it's a good idea to provide them with some wooden perches and toys to exercise their beaks on.

They can develop a bond with only one human and refuse to interact with other people.

Senegals are curious, fun-loving animals that are much "mellower" compared with many other parrots. They are acrobatic, amusing, and generally sweet.

Keep in mind that pet birds can be a bit messy in their eating habits.  Out in the wild, a bird just drops unwanted food to the forest floor where other eager animals are waiting.  You can help the situation with seed guards and mats around the cage.

Food:

Senegals need a varied diet including lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.  A seed mix and a pelleted diet can be used as a daily staple. "Quicko" by Sun Seed is an excellent supplement for any pet bird.

Housing:

A cage should be as spacious as possible.  The minimum measurements would be 18 x 24 x 24".   The bars should be no more than 1/2" apart. A variety of perches with differing widths will help 'exercise' their feet.

They love to chew and explore new things, so supply a variety of toys for this intelligent bird.   They love warm spritz-baths once or twice a week.  They love to roll and play in water.  A clean fresh dish of dechlorinated water should be supplied every day.

Life Span: Up to 50 Years
