History:
Developed on
the Scottish Isle of Skye, the Cairn has roots going back to the middle
ages. The were used to hunt fox, badger and otter. They were highly prized for their working ethic,
not their appearance. A tough package of courage, tenacity and intelligence
all wrapped up in a weatherproof coat. Originally, the Cairn was but one
color variety in the family of Scotch dogs. The group was eventually
divided into Scottish, West-Highland and Cairn terriers. The Cairn
terrier's greatest fame came when one played Toto in movie "The Wizard of
Oz".
Temperament:
The Cairn is all terrier...bold, hardy,
inquisitive, clever and scrappy. It enjoys playing with children and
is tough enough to withstand some rough-housing. It can get aggressive
with other dogs and can't resist chasing small animals.
Maintenance:
Even though it is a small dog, the Cairn
requires daily outdoor exercise, either a walk on a leash or a fun game in
the back-yard. Its wire coat needs combing once per week..

this breed comes from their ability to chase critters out of the "cairns" (piles of stone that served as
farming landmarks). |
