History:
This is the smallest of the pure-bred
dogs. A very old breed with a controversial history. Some
believe the dog originated in China and was brought to the new world by
Spanish traders. Another theory contends that the breed originated in
South America. The dog was used by the Aztecs. When Cortez conquered
the Aztecs in the 1500s, the little dogs were left to fend for themselves.
In 1850, three tiny dogs were found in Chihuahua, Mexico. A few were
brought to the US.
Temperament:
Reserved with strangers, the Chihuahua
has an intense loyalty and devotion to a single person. Some may be bold,
some timid. They tend to be long-lived 14-18 years.
Maintenance:
The Chihuahua
can pretty much exercise themselves running from room to room. They do
not like the cold, but love to lay out on sunny days and bask in the
sun's rays.
