History:
The Dachshund
is bred with three varieties of coat: (1) Smooth; (2) Wirehaired; (3)
Longhaired and is shown in two sizes, standard and miniature. The Dachshund
was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers. Dachshund
means “badger dog” in German. Miniature Dachshunds, who were first bred to
combat rabbits, would eventually become prominent members of the Dachshund
breed. In 1885 the Dachshund was recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Temperament:
The Dachshund is curious and bold.
Always ready for a romp in the yard where it likes to dig. It is
independent-minded but still enjoys joining in family activities.
Maintenance:
Moderate walks on a leash. Smooth
coat requires minimal grooming.
Weight Range:
up to 11 lbs.
Avg. Height: 5-6 in.
