History:
The Shetland
Sheepdog is probably descended from Scottish Rough Collies and other smaller
dogs. By 1700, the breed was completely developed. For centuries, these
little dogs were used as an intelligent herder. The Sheltie is an extremely
smart and willing worker. They have a gentle nature and are one of the top
obedience competition breeds.
Temperament:
Shelties are very bright and sensitive
dogs. They live to please their human family. Because they are
obedient and quick to learn, the Sheltie is a great first dog for people.
They can be timid and shy of strangers. May bark a lot.
Because
of its small size, the Sheltie is very adaptable to city living, as long as
he is given proper exercise. Shelties are good with children and make
delightful family companions.
Maintenance:
Short jogs or play sessions in the
backyard. It's thick coat needs brushing every other day.
