History:
The Toy Fox Terrier is an American
creation. Dog fanciers bred Smooth Fox Terriers with other smaller
breeds such as Chihuahuas, Min. Pins and Italian Greyhounds. The TFT is both
a toy and a terrier. It maintains the terrier courage and energy, while the
crossbreeding with toy breeds gives this dog a milder disposition. The TFT
was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1936 and is currently seeking
AKC recognition.
Temperament:
The TFT possesses keen intelligence and
courage. Always alert and friendly, his loyalty to his family is fierce.
Like other terriers, the TFT is spirited, determined and not easily
intimidated. Although diminutive, the TFT doesn't know it and will seldom
back down. As a terrier, The TFT will naturally take to hunting small
vermin. But You will also find them involved with obedience, and
agility trials as well as participating in flyball competitions.
Maintenance:
Their short coat lends to little
maintenance. Brushing during shedding season is al that is really
needed.

The size of
the breed in the 1870s was 18 to 20 pounds. Owners of these
brave little dogs found that the smallest, which they called
"runts", were the scrappiest of the bunch. These little dogs
were prized for their temperament. Smaller dogs were developed
and eventually were found in the seven-pound range. |
