History:
One of the
most glamorous and popular of the toy breeds, it is amazing to believe that
it was originally bred to control rats in Yorkshire mines and cotton mills.
The Yorkie is the product of cross-breeding several types of Scottish and
English terriers, as well as the Maltese. Prior to 1900, the Yorkie was
heavier and larger weighing 12-14 lbs. Selective breeding has brought it
down to its current size. Originally a fearless little ratter, by 1875, the
breed became popular with ladies of wealth in both Britain and the U.S.
Temperament:
Always eager for adventure, the Yorkie
doesn't know it's a small dog. They have been described as inquisitive
and stubborn, sometimes aggressive to strange dogs. They tend to exercise
themselves around the home.
Maintenance:
Their long coats require brushing or
combing every other day. Grooming must
be done on a regular basis. Although the coat is easy to care for it
is time consuming and necessary in order to keep your dog in healthy
condition.
